Be Safe

Following a few incidents where players have incurred shoulder, wrist, and leg injuries, we'd like to remind everyone about the need to do warm-up exercises before any ping ping session.  Our awesome Rock Steady Boxing coach Luke Barrett has put together a brand new 12-minute warm up video for Parkinson's players that you can access on YouTube.

Also, don't forget to take these precautions to avoid falls:

  • Wear rubber soles, never slippery shoes.  And note that not all rubber soles are safe.  I learned that one player fell wearing rubber soled "Merrills" that were intended for outdoors use.  Look for table tennis or indoor volleyball shoes.

  • Be conscious of balls on the floor around you. Look around you before starting a rally and pick up any balls near your feet

  • Remember what our coach Suchy has taught us about footwork: When moving side to side, always move the outside foot ; never cross one leg over the other.

  • When bending over, bend your knees to lower the center of gravity.

Elevators

Did you know that there is an elevator at Spin and also at Ping Pong LES?  If you need an elevator, please call me in advance (516 680 7983) and I will arrange for a manager escort (Spin) or coordinator escort (Ping Pod LES).

 FAQs

  • We have arranged discounted tables with two partners in Manhattan:

    1. Spin at 48 E. 23rd St., NY 10010 (Between Madison & Park). We play here on Thursdays and Fridays. This is a huge ping pong venue, with many tables.

    2. Ping Pod at two locations. These venues are much smaller, with 3-4 tables each.

      • UWS 243 W99th St. We play here on Mondays.

      • LES 42 Allen St. 2nd floor. We play here on Tuesdays.

  • Please let us know that you’re coming by registering here. If you show up without registering and the venue is too crowded, we will only let people who signed up in advance play on the tables.

  • When you arrive at the venue, you should look for a coordinator to "check you in", collect $15 if you haven’t paid online, and get any help needed (e.g. receive a paddle, find a person to hit balls with, etc.).  The coordinators are as follows. Just ask anyone to point us out—everyone knows us:

    • Mondays: John Newhouse

    • Tuesdays & Thursdays: Jan Rose and Bob Friedman

    • Fridays: Bob Friedman

  • On Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays at Spin, the 2 hours include:

    1. 25 minutes check in and informal play (find someone to play with or ask a coordinator to match you)

    2. 15 minutes group announcements and warm-ups.

    3. 60 minutes matched play (coordinators match players and assign coaching). Players switch every 10 minutes.

    4. 20 minutes informal play

Monday and Tuesday sessions at the Ping Pod venues are informal. Coordinators match players with coaches and with each other, and they facilitate rotation every 10-15 minutes.

  • In the larger sessions, we have sign-up sheets for coaches.  Put your name on the sign-up sheet for the coach or coaches you want to play with.  The coaches know to switch every 10 minutes.  We give priority to newbies.

  • The PingPod venues that we play in on Mondays and Tuesdays are fully automated.  Players let themselves into the venue by accessing the “door opener” link on their smartphones.  We provide the links every week that we receive from our partner PingPod. You will need to register with PingPod using your email (free of charge) to use the link.

If this is all too burdensome, no worries. If we know you are coming, we will look for you and let you in.

  • There is a $15 fee for each session.

You may pay through credit card, Zelle, or cash.

    Our Zelle account is Jan.Rose@PingPongParkinson.org

  • You do not need to come with a partner to play.  We will find others for you to play with and on days where we have coaches, make sure everyone gets some coaching.

  • We try to send out a weekly newsletter regularly, but it is not always possible. If you receive a newsletter, you will be forever on the distribution list until you ask me by email to be removed.
