Biggest PingPongParkinson(R) World Championship Yet. Thank you Austria!
The PingPongParkinson® World Championship 2023 has come to an end. What a tournament it was!
New world champions emerged and former champions re-positioned. This was so far the most competitive world championship and with plenty of surprises.
We would like to celebrate all players for their determination and congratulate the medalists who took the podium.
Matches begun on September 26th, 2023 and concluded on Saturday, September 30th, 2023 where the fierce finals were held. Find a listing of all winners here.
The highlights were the world champions, Thorsten Flues & Ilya Rozenblat, both title holders in 2021 and 2022 respectively who contested for the Men’s singles class 1 first place in jaw dropping fashion. They are also the only players who have already won three titles at previous world championships.
Rie Koyama similarly cannot fail to be mentioned as she remained undefeated through all matches, keen to defend her 2022 win in the Women’s singles class 1. With unmatched scores, she took home the gold medal once again.
Silke Kind surprisingly emerged with three medals in class 1, Women’s singles, Mixed doubles and Women’s doubles paired with Thorsten Flues & Gabi Salingré respectively.
And yet again the Dynamites Jesper Jerslund & Peter Derheld hotly contested for the gold in the Men’s doubles class 1 but gave in to their German arch-rivals duo of Thorsten Boomhuis & Thorsten Flues.

Atlanta Students Gift of Giving - Ping Pong for Parkinson's
In the US alone, 90,000 people are diagnosed with Parkinson Disease every year. Out of this number more are diagnosed late, or misdiagnosed until much later. So how can we proactively combat this? We at PingPongParkinson® are promoting the positive benefits that playing ping pong can bring to those diagnosed with PD as well as to the elderly population.
Playing ping pong helps build neurons, and could be aiding in the rehabilitation of neuro-degenerative diseases before and after diagnosis.
We have experienced signs of slow PD progression through active play and would love to extend our sport therapy program more countrywide and across the globe. Your generosity will help keep us moving towards this goal. See how you can donate or volunteer.
Also read more about how high schoolers in Atlanta partnered with us to start a local club as a way to give back!
“It is a great space for people with Parkinson’s no matter how they feel, to meet other people with Parkinson’s and get a safe space to exercise and have fun every week” said 16-year old Gabe.
“As high school students, we don’t really get the opportunity to make something that could be life-changing for other people, something so small as ping pong. It has been really impactful” said 17-year old Ryan.
Interview thanks to Atlanta News First.
